Do I need a license to catch crabs recreationally?
You do not need a license to recreationally take crabs with a dip net, baited line (no hook), or drop net. A recreational fishing license and gear license are required for crab traps (No more than 10 traps - must be tagged and have escape rings). If you are on a wildlife management area you do need a recreational hunting or fishing license or wild Louisiana stamp to utilize the area. The recreational limit for crabs is 144 per day.
How do I register my boat?
You may pick up a registration form at any regional office or download one from the Department website. Complete this form and forward to the address at top of application. You may also go directly to the Baton Rouge headquarters office and have the boat registered. A notarized bill of sale or registration certificate from the owner of record is required.
When and where is a hunter education course being offered?
The region office can tell you if there are any courses being offered in the area. Also you can go to the Department web site and find all updated course offerings.
How do I get a duplicate hunter education card?
You may call the region office in your area and give your information and one will be mailed to you. You may also go to the Department web site and get a temporary certification, then one will be mailed to you.
At what age do you stop buying recreational licenses?
Anyone whose birthday is prior to June 1, 1940 does not have to purchase recreational licenses. Anyone whose birthday is on June 1, 1940 or after must purchase a Senior recreational hunting/fishing license. Recreational gear licenses must be purchased by everyone, regardless of age. The fee for the Senior hunting/fishing license is $5. A lifetime Senior hunting/fishing license may be purchased at the cost of $50.
Does a Mississippi resident need a non-resident license to recreationally fish bordering waters on the Louisiana side?
No. Louisiana and Mississippi have a reciprocal agreement for license purpose only that allows residents from either state to fish only state bordering waters with their resident license as long as they are in the water and not on the land.
Can you come look at my dove field and tell me if it is legal to hunt doves on?
No. We have no way of knowing if bait was distributed on the field before or after
we look at it.
Can I hunt deer with a laser sight on my bow?
No. You can?t hunt deer with any weapon that projects a beam of light from it.
Does my child have to wear a life jacket in a boat?
Anyone 12 years of age or younger has to wear a Coast Guard approved wearable life jacket that fits the child any time the boat is under power.
I'm from Louisiana and I bought a boat from someone from Mississippi. Do I have to pay Louisiana sales tax on the boat before I register it in Louisiana?
Yes. Any boat bought from another state and brought into Louisiana has to have
Louisiana sales tax paid on it to a state tax collector. You must send this in along with the original notarized bill of sale and proof of registration from the previous state showing the person you bought the boat from as the previous registered owner and a registration application along with the proper fees.
Can I hunt squirrels from a moving boat?
Yes, as long as you are properly licensed and you have permission from the landowner to hunt the squirrels from his property.
I want to come to Louisiana to deer hunt. Is my hunter safety card from my home state valid in Louisiana?
Yes, if you have passed the hunter safety course in your state and have your current hunter safety card in your possession.
Can I run my rabbit dogs on my lease for training purposes during turkey season?
Yes, but be mindful of members who hunt turkeys on your lease.
Do I need to wear hunter orange while deer hunting on private property?
Yes, persons hunting on privately owned, legally posted land may wear a hunter orange cap or hat in lieu of the 400 square inches while walking to and from elevated stands. Once you are elevated you may remove your hunter orange cap or hat.
Can I use a magnified scope on my muzzleloader during muzzleloader season?
Yes
With New Orleans commercial license sales office closed due to Katrina where can I purchase my commercial licenses?
In Baton Rouge in person, or call (225) 765-2880 for them to mail you an application, but you must have the original license in hand before you operate commercially.
I built a homemade boat and how do I go about getting it registered?
You must fill out a boat registration application form and a Homemade Boat Application for Inspection which must be notarized. These are sent to boat registration in Baton Rouge. If all is correct you are sent a File I.D. number and told to set up an appointment for inspection. You will be required to have the File I.D. letter, receipts and invoices for the materials you used, etc. at the inspection.
I am a Louisiana resident 60 years old. Do I need to buy a hunting and fishing license?
Yes, you are required to purchase a senior license at a cost of $5.00. Only people who made 60 years of age before June 1, 2000 are exempt, and not required to purchase a license.
Can I use a hoop net recreationally in the coastal parishes of the state?
No, you cannot use hoop nets recreationally south of Interstate 12 from where it crosses the Louisiana/Mississippi state line Westward to Baton Rouge, and south of Interstate 10 from the city of Baton Rouge westward to where it crosses the Louisiana/Texas state line.
I am going to my camp fishing for the weekend, how many red drum and speckled trout can I possess per person legally?
Recreational saltwater anglers are allowed to possess a two day?s bag limit of red drum and speckled trout only on land; however, no person shall take more than the daily limit in one day, or possess over the daily bag limit while fishing or on the water. (Note: The daily limit of red drum is 5 per person a minimum of 16 inches with only one of those being over 27 inches, and 25 speckled trout which must be a minimum of 12 inches).
I have just purchased a 14ft flat boat to use for fishing. What type of PFD'S are required to have on board?
You are required to have a minimum of 1 Coast Guard approved wearable life vest for each person on board while the boat is on the water. Persons 12 years of age and younger are required to wear a PFD while the boat is under power.
I have moved here from another state and have a 12 year old boat which I want to register in Louisiana. Do I have to pay taxes on this boat before it can be registered?
No, only on boats 10 years old and newer are taxes required before they can be registered. A receipt proving payment, with the registration application, will be required for such boats.
I live on the Texas side of Caddo Lake and want to know if I can fish yo-yo's on the Louisiana side of Caddo Lake?
Under the Caddo Lake yo-yo restrictions no nonresident may fish yo-yo's or trigger devices at any time on Caddo Lake.
I have just purchased an electronic wild game call device, which has a wild turkey call available in this device. Can I use this call to hunt wild turkey this season?
No, Louisiana Turkey hunting regulations do not allow the use of electronic calls to hunt wild turkey.
