SALTWATER RECREATIONAL SEASONS

Red Snapper Opens:  12:01 a.m. June 1, 2008  Closes:  12:01 a.m. on August 5, 2008.  The daily take limit of two red snapper per person will be in effect for the duration of the 2008 season.  The captain and crew of vessels under charter have a creel limit of zero.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announced rules for harvest of red snapper in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico federal waters in January, 2008. The announcement is available at the following link:

NMFS announced change in the closure date for the recreational harvest of red snapper on March 25, 2008.  That closure date is currently set to be August 5, 2008.  The announcement of this rule change is available at

The Regional Administrator of NMFS requested that Louisiana enact compatible regulations for this fishery.  At its June 5, 2008 meeting, the Wildlife and Fisheries Commission modified the rules regarding the season for the recreational harvest of red snapper in Louisiana state waters.  In part, that rule reads:

The recreational red snapper season is established to open on June 1, 2008, and remain open until 12:01 a.m. August 5, 2008.  The recreational bag limit for red snapper shall be 2 fish per person per day during this open season.  Captain and crew members shall not harvest or possess red snapper while operating as charter vessels and headboats as defined in Federal Regulations 50 CFR Part 622.2.
