Why Are Volunteers Important?
Volunteer Instructors Make it Happen!
Volunteer instructors are the backbone of LDWF?s hunter education program. Volunteers are connected to their communities and through their efforts more students can be reached. Volunteers as a group possess a vast wealth of information which has proven to be invaluable in passing on the knowledge and skills of the outdoors. Through the countless hours of teaching time they donate, thousands of students are taught the lessons of responsibility, conservation, firearms safety and safety in the outdoors. Each year 18,000 students graduate from hunter education courses taught statewide.  Become a part of the team that makes a difference!

What Courses Are Taught in our Hunter Education Program?
Hunter Education, Bowhunter Education, Muzzleloading Education as well as providing instructions that teach other important hunting related outdoor skills.

What Do We Look For In a Volunteer Instructor?

• A professional demeanor
• Courteous and respectful
• Good communicator
• People oriented
• Dedicated and motivated
• Someone who believes in the importance of education

Requirements for Becoming a Hunter Education Instructor

• Be of reputable character
• Attend a 12 hour instructor training course
• Complete livefire exercises
• Pass a written exam
• Undergo a criminal background check
• Teach or assist in teaching one course every 24 months.

What Other Ways Can I Serve as a Volunteer?
Serving as a mentor to pass on the tradition of hunting is a noble undertaking. The LDWF sponsors hunts that target opportunities for youth and is looking for volunteers to help pass on the responsibility, knowledge and skills needed to make a hunter or an angler. In addition volunteers are used for:

Benefits of Being a Volunteer Instructor
Incentives are offered to those who donate their time as volunteer hunter education instructors. The greatest reward though, of serving as a volunteer instructor is the self satisfaction of knowing you are helping to preserve the future of hunting by passing on a time honored tradition.
