The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) Wildlife Division's Forestry Program has posted the Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) Forest Management Compartment prescriptions on the department's Web site for public comment at www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/wmas/prescriptions.
LDWF manages the WMA system under a General Forest Management Plan approved by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) in 1995 and prepares wildlife and forest management prescriptions only on the lands owned by the agency, not leased lands.
Each WMA is subdivided into compartments that allow the agency to examine portions of WMAs each year and to specify management actions necessary to sustain wildlife populations. These recommendations are prescription details that the technical staff prescribes as appropriate to address maintaining or enhancing habitat components within the compartment.
The prescriptions contain critical information on the present condition of the forested habitat, soils within the compartment, any unique or natural areas within the compartment and particular concerns that have been addressed relative to that particular compartment or WMA. The prescriptions address the forested habitat for the short and long term with prescribed practices drawn out for the current entry period and any necessary references for future entries.
To review the prescriptions go to LDWF's Web site www.wlf.louisiana.gov. Under the "Hunting, Fishing & Boating" heading click "Wildlife Management Areas" and then click "WMA Prescriptions."
