OYSTER SEASON DELAY ANNOUNCED FOR THE LAKE MECHANT PUBLIC OYSTER SEED GROUNDS

The oyster season in the Lake Mechant Public Oyster Seed Grounds originally scheduled for Oct. 28-31, 2008 has been delayed until further notice by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
Biological sampling has documented average oyster mortality within the seed grounds of nearly 60 percent over the past few months, with some locations reaching as high as 100 percent. Commercial harvest in this area may threaten the long-term sustainability of the remaining oyster resources in the Lake Mechant Public Oyster Seed Grounds.
