10th ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS STUDENT ART & LANGUAGE ARTS CONTEST
ENTRY DEADLINE: THURSDAY, APRIL 26!
The Louisiana Environmental Education Commission and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries along with contest sponsor, Alcoa Foundation, invite students to participate in the Tenth Environmental Awareness Art & Language Arts Contest. Louisiana students, ages 5-18, may enter their original work in the art category and/or the language arts category. The theme for the 2012 contest is "Louisiana Waters: Protect, Conserve, Enjoy!" This theme can be used to introduce water sustainability initiatives in classrooms, educating students on how they can incorporate the protection, conservation, and enjoyment of water in their daily lives.
Winning entries will be published in our 2013 calendar and are distributed statewide. Winning artwork is placed on billboards throughout the state and the poems and essays are published in large circulation newspapers. Cash prizes are also awarded! In addition, winning students are honored with a ceremony at the Governor's Mansion. All submissions must be postmarked by Thursday, April 26, 2012. Join the JASON National Argo Team! (Deadline: May 1)
The JASON Project is seeking a diverse, creative, and adventurous group of students and educators to venture into the field with scientists to perform cutting edge science explorations. The Argonauts will embark on an exciting journey, during which they will:
• Work side by side with scientists in the field,
• Serve as a mentor and role model for the JASON Community
• Regularly interact with the entire JASON community through speaking engagements, online posts & more!
National Student and Educator Argonauts will spend up to 10 days in the field during the summer or fall of 2012. JASON will pay for all travel, lodging, food (meals and snacks), and programming/equipment costs related to JASON Argonaut activities. Applications are being accepted now, with a deadline of Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Students should be 14 or 15 years old by June 1, 2012 to apply. Educators need at least five years of experience working with students and continuation as an educator in 2012-2013. • A week-long, dynamic teacher workshop that allows teachers to work with educator/scientists to learn about Louisiana coastal wetlands, issues and history. The focus of the summer workshop is to create wetland stewards of teachers in order for them to educate co-workers and students in their home parishes about coastal land loss. Fifty-five professional contact hours will be accrued upon the completion of this wetland institute.

Louisiana Sea Grant Seeks High School Teachers In Coastal Parishes For Oral History Project On Louisiana’s Changing Coastal Environment
Louisiana Sea Grant would like to work with teams of 2-3 high school teachers from coastal parishes to collaborate in creating oral histories conducted by their students during the 2012-2013 school year. The student’s oral histories will focus on the challenges of living in coastal communities where sea level rise, wetland loss, and a continuously changing environment affect coastal communities, their people, and their culture. Sea Grant will provide the equipment needed to complete the project, workshops in best practices of conducting oral histories with students, training for students and teachers on the equipment and assistance where needed. This interdisciplinary project will meet several GLEs across the curriculum and will provide a small stipend for teachers. Summer Coastal Program for Teachers (Deadline: May 11)
The 2012 FAMU Summer Teacher Coastal Stewardship Program will be held June 14, 2012 through June 28, 2012. The program provides teachers with the skills, materials and knowledge to teach watershed conservation and stewardship, and increase K-12 environmental literacy. This program is open to K-12 science teachers within upstream watersheds that drain into the Gulf of Mexico. See the attached flyer for additional information. NASA Seeks Hosts for Space Station Interactive Education Events (Deadline: June 1)
NASA is seeking formal and informal education organizations to host live in-flight interactive conversations between the next generation of explorers and astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Comprehensive proposals are being accepted for missions scheduled between September 2012 and March 2013. The deadline to submit is Friday, June 1, 2012. NASA crew members will participate in 20-minute question-and-answer sessions with students who will learn what it is like to live and work in space. U.S. education organizations including school districts, museums, science centers, national and regional education organizations and local, state and federal government agencies are eligible to participate. Organizations may apply individually or work together. NASA provides this opportunity at no charge to the host institution and will work with the organization to plan the event.
These unique educational opportunities are made available through Teaching From Space (TFS), a NASA education initiative. TFS will hold several online information sessions about downlinks and the proposal process with interested organizations. 2012 Draft National Water Program Strategy: Response to Climate Change Open for Public Comment
EPA has released the draft “National Water Program 2012 Strategy: Response to Climate Change,” which describes how EPA’s water-related programs plan to address the impacts of climate change and provides long-term visions, goals and strategic actions for the management of sustainable water resources for future generations.
The 2012 strategy, which builds upon EPA's first climate change and water strategy released in 2008, focuses on five key areas: infrastructure, watersheds and wetlands, coastal and ocean waters, water quality, and working with Tribes. It also describes geographically-based strategic issues and actions. EPA will accept public comments on the draft strategy until May 17, 2012.
