Hunting, Research, and Management

LDWF manages the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) as a commercial, renewable natural resource through sustainable wild harvest and alligator farming.

— Did You Know? —

LDWF licenses Nuisance Alligator Hunters across the state to capture nuisance alligators and minimize conflicts between alligators and humans. These hunters capture and remove more than 1,000 nuisance alligators every year.

Alligator Management

LDWF manages the American alligator as a commercial, renewable natural resource. Through LDWF’s extensive research and wise management that includes sustainable wild harvest and alligator farming, Louisiana’s wild alligator population has increased from less than 100,000 to more than 2 million in the past 50 years. There are also nearly 1 million alligators on farms in Louisiana. LDWF also ensures compliance with international alligator trade requirements and manages Louisiana’s nuisance alligators. LDWF’s alligator management program is recognized internationally as a wildlife conservation success story and a model for sustainable use; the principles of this program have been applied to managing crocodilian species worldwide.

Alligator Hide Care

The rugged hide of the alligator is used to make some of the most elegant and expensive leather products in the world. Quality is a must to any customer willing to buy alligator products that cost several hundred to several thousand dollars each. A commitment to quality must start with the trappers who harvest the alligator and must be shared by the helpers and processors who skin the hides. Louisiana Alligator Advisory Council

Comprised of three alligator farmers, three coastal landowners, and three alligator hunters, the Council works within LDWF to promote sustainable use of Louisiana's alligator resource and to ensure wise management of the species and its habitat. The Council, through the International Alligator and Crocodile Trade Study, monitors worldwide trade of all crocodilian species. A Council representative attends Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) meetings and works closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to regulate and document trade so that it remains legal, sustainable, and verifiable.

The Council maintains lists of alligator farmers and ranchers, buyers and dealers, tanneries, and retailers, as well as information on alligator meat and hides.
