The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is pleased to announce the “Bear With Us” educator workshop scheduled for June 17-18, 2014 at Palmetto Island State Park, located south of Abbeville, La.

During this comprehensive workshop, educators will learn about our state mammal – the Louisiana black bear. Geared toward teachers of middle and high school students and informal educators, this workshop will cover topics ranging from the bears of the world to current research happening in Louisiana. The workshop agenda includes presentations, demonstration of classroom lesson activities, and field work related to black bear habitat identification using GPS and telemetry units.

All participating educators will receive GLE-aligned lessons focused on the Louisiana black bear, meals, one night lodging at a Palmetto Island State Park cabin (night of June 17, 2014), and Continuing Learning Units (CLUs). Upon completion of the workshop, each participant will receive a GPS unit for classroom instruction and $50 stipend.

Teachers interested in the 2014 “Bear With Us” teacher workshop can contact LDWF Wildlife Outreach Coordinator Carrie Salyers at 337-262-2080 or csalyers@wlf.la.gov .
