Federal Lands
Several federal agencies manage hundreds of thousands of public lands in Louisiana. Like state-owned public lands, these areas offer prime hunting, fishing, bird-watching, and other recreational opportunities. Note that licenses and permits are required for many activities on federal lands. See individual federal land websites listed below and current regulations for more information.
National Forests

- The U.S. Forest Service manages the following wildlife management preserves as part of Kisatchie National Forest:
- Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve (36,000 acres in Grant and Winn parishes)
- Red Dirt National Wildlife Management Preserve (38,000 acres in Natchitoches Parish).
National Parks/Preserves
Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve: Barataria Preserve

National Wildlife Refuges
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages 23 national wildlife refuges within Louisiana, covering more than 550,000 acres throughout 29 parishes.

- Indian Bayou Area
- 28,500 acres within St. Martin and St. Landry parishes
- Old River Control and Lock Area
- 2,699 acres within Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, and Concordia parishes
- Bonnet Carre Spillway
- 2,699 acres within Pointe Coupee, West Feliciana, and Concordia parishes
