Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a Winnsboro man for allegedly being over the daily bag limit of squirrels on Oct. 1 in Catahoula Parish.

Agents cited Landon L. Cotton, 36, after they found him in possession of 22 freshly harvested squirrels.  The daily bag limit is eight.

Agents were patrolling the Boeuf River area the opening morning of squirrel season when they came across a squirrel vest containing 22 harvested squirrels.  The agents took cover behind some trees and about 30 minutes later observed Cotton retrieve the squirrels.

When agents made contact with Cotton, he informed the agents that he harvested all 22 squirrels putting him 14 over the daily bag limit.  Agents seized the 22 squirrels and donated them to a local charity.

Over the limit of squirrels brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail.  Cotton may also face civil restitution totaling $447.

Agents participating in the case are Sgt. Lee Tarver and Senior Agent Kurt Hatten.
