Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents cited an Erath man for alleged crabbing violations in Vermilion Parish on July 4.
Agents cited Chad A. Leblanc, 54, for theft of crab traps and intentional concealment of fish.
Agents were on patrol in Vermillion Bay when they observed a vessel pulling up several crab traps and removing the contents into the vessel. Agents made contact with Leblanc who was operating the vessel.
During questioning, Leblanc repeatedly stated that he did not have anything onboard the vessel and that he was out riding around. Agents checked the ice chests, which were empty, and a livewell in the rear of the vessel that was full of water. Agents drained the livewell and found 12 crabs in the bottom.
Agents then checked with the owner of the crab traps who said Leblanc did not have permission to remove any crabs from the traps.
Agents seized the crabs and returned them to the water.
Intentional concealment of illegal fish brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Theft of crab traps carries a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail.
Agents participating in the case are Corporal Derek Logan and Corporal Joshua Segrest.
