Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents arrested a Winnfield man for alleged illegal firearm and drug possession charges in Winn Parish on Dec. 8.
Agents arrested Dustin Norton, 35, for illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, illegally carrying of firearms while in the presence of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Agents also cited him for hunting deer without a resident deer hunting license, hunting without possessing deer tags and failing to wear hunters orange.
Agents were on patrol on Dec. 8 when they found a parked truck that looked like it was trying to be concealed while someone was hunting in the woods. Agents setup surveillance on the truck and observed Norton return to the truck without wearing any hunter’s orange and carrying a rifle.
Agents made contact with Norton and found him in possession of a 30-30 rifle with the serial number obliterated, methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Agents learned that Norton was also a convicted felon and that he did not possess a deer hunting license or deer tags.
Agents arrested Norton and booked him into the Winn Parish Jail.
Possession of methamphetamine brings up to a $5,000 fine and two years in jail. Illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon carries a $1,000 to $5,000 fine and 10 to 20 years of jail. Possession of a firearm while being in possession of a controlled dangerous substance carries up to a $10,000 fine and five to 10 years in jail. Possession of drug paraphernalia carries up to a $300 fine and 15 days in jail. Possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number brings up to a $1,000 fine and one to five years in jail.
Hunting deer without a deer hunting license and without deer tags brings up to a $350 fine for each offense. Failing to wear hunters orange carries up to a $50 fine.
Agents involved in the case are Senior Agent Dustin Barton, Senior Agent Michael Thacker and Sgt. James Smith.
