Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited two men for alleged deer hunting violations in Bossier and Caddo parishes on Nov. 26.

Agents cited James Coon, 73, of Benton, for failing to tag deer, failing to validate deer harvest, taking over the daily limit of deer, and taking over the seasonal limit of deer. Agents also cited Jeffrey Coon, 42, of Vivian, for hunting under hunting license revocation or suspension, hunting without a basic hunting license, hunting without a deer-hunting license, hunting deer without deer tags in possession, failing to tag deer and failing to validate deer harvest.

Agents were on patrol near Plain Dealing when they made contact with James Coon and found him in possession of an antlered deer that was tagged and validated. Agents also found another antlered deer in the same area where he harvested the deer in his possession. James Coon admitted to agents of harvesting both deer during the same hunting session.

During questioning, James Coon also admitted to harvesting a total of five deer this season of which four were antlered and three were not tagged. James Coon also admitted that his son, Jeffrey Coon, also harvested an antlered deer during the 2024-25 deer-hunting season.

After further investigation, agents found that Jeffrey Coon’s hunting licenses are revoked. Agents seized four deer and donated them to Hunters for the Hungry and a local family in need.

The daily limit for antlered deer in this area is one antlered deer per day and three antlered deer per season.

Taking over the daily limit and seasonal limit of deer brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail for each offense. Hunting under hunting license revocation, failing to tag deer, failing to validate deer, hunting without a basic hunting license, hunting deer without a deer-hunting license, and hunting deer without deer tags in possession brings up to a $350 fine for each offense.

James Coon will also face civil restitution totaling $4,874 for the replacement value of the deer. Jeffrey Coon will face civil restitution totaling $1,624 for the replacement value of his deer.

Agents participating in this case are Sgt. Michael Meserole, Sgt. Bryant Coburn and Corporal Evan Hoek.
