Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a subject for alleged deer hunting violations in LaSalle Parish on Dec. 17.

Agents cited Caleb G. McKeithen, 52, of Olla, for taking deer during illegal hours, taking over the seasonal limit of deer and using archery equipment with an illegal electronic sight.

Agents conducted surveillance on McKeithen on Dec. 11 near Olla when he remained in his deer stand after legal shooting hours. Agents heard McKeithen shoot a crossbow at a deer and proceed with trying to track the deer. Agents made contact with McKeithen and found him in possession of a crossbow with a thermal scope and an eight point deer.

During the investigation, agents found further evidence that McKeithen harvested five antlered deer during the 2023-24 deer-hunting season and five antlered deer so far in the 2024-25 season.

During questioning, McKeithen admitted to harvesting five antlered deer with four of them being at night in 2023-24 and five antlered deer so far in 2024-25 with three of them being at night. He also admitted to harvesting all 10 deer with his crossbow fitted with the thermal scope.

Agents seized the thermal scope, crossbow, two mounted deer and the eight-point deer.

Taking deer during illegal hours brings a $900 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in jail. Taking over the seasonal limit of deer and possessing a crossbow fitted with a thermal scope carries a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail for each offense.

McKeithen may also face civil restitution totaling $17,427 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.

Agents involved in the case are Sgt. Raymond Davis, Corporal Jeremiah Fletcher, Sgt. Eric Little, Corporal Ryan Durand and Lt. Chad Watts.
