Today, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission (LWFC) adopted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to modify the current black bass regulations on Bussey Brake Reservoir in Morehouse Parish. The proposed change will increase the maximum length limit (MLL) for black bass from 16 to 18 inches and remove the allowance of one bass over the MLL. The proposed change, however, will allow for the temporary retention of a bass greater than 22 inches in an aerated livewell to weigh on a personal scale or LDWF-provided certified scale at the launch site. The daily creel limit will remain at five bass per day.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) recognizes Bussey Brake Reservoir as a unique fishery that has become one of the premiere trophy bass fishing destinations for anglers from across the country. Following a lengthy renovation, the reservoir was reopened to the public in July of 2020. This fishery has experienced a phenomenal “new lake effect” period where habitat and proper stocking resulted in high growth rates of largemouth bass. Conservative estimates indicate that over 100 bass of 10+ pounds have been caught in Bussey Brake since its reopening.  Biologists feel that now is the time to adjust the regulations to best manage this rapidly evolving fishery.

“Protecting and prolonging trophy bass fishing opportunities at Bussey Brake Reservoir is a top priority, creating the maximum opportunity for anglers to catch a new state record or personal best bass,” said LDWF Secretary Madison Sheahan.
