Description
Medium-sized diving duck. Males black chest & rump, white flanks & gray back; head black-green-purpleish. Bill is light blue-gray, eyes yellow. Females' overall are grayish brown; the head is brown; a white patch separates the eye and bill.
Range and Habitat
Breeds across Alaska & Canada and into prairie Canada & the states. Winters on large, ice-free lakes, ponds, riparian areas, estuaries, bays & open ocean.
Behavior
Diving duck feeds primarily on invertebrates (snails, clams) in large water bodies & riparian systems. Will frequent environments of high salinities, including open oceans.
Population Status
Abundant. Long-term, gradual decline
Hunting License Information
Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
