Description
Thin, straight, ribbon-like submerged grass. Leaves have rounded tips, which can grow above the water surface. Leaves grow in thick clusters from the base. Leaves can be up to 1 inch across and several feet long.
Range and Habitat
Native throughout most of North America including the Gulf states. Found in fresh to brackish rivers, lakes, and ponds in Assumption, Calcasieu, Cameron, Natchitoches, Orleans, Sabine, St. Martin, St. Mary, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, Terrebonne, and Vermilion parishes.
Behavior
Reproduces using seeds and runners. Grows in dense underwater fields. Provides food for waterfowl and habitat for many small aquatic species.
