Description
A medium-sized, tan and cream-colored moth. Has a large black eyespot surrounded by yellow on the top surface of its pink inner-margined hindwing. Wingspan is up to 3.5 inches. When identifying this moth, be sure to eliminate the much more common io moth.
Range and Habitat
Coastal salt marsh of the northern Gulf of Mexico from eastern Texas through Louisiana to western Mississippi, particularly in smooth cordgrass (its host plant).
Behavior
Long flight season from February through November. Does not feed as adult due to lack of functioning mouthparts.
Population Status
Ranked globally as G1G3, ranked as S1 (critically imperiled) in Louisiana, possibly throughout its entire range. Main threat is loss of salt marsh, exacerbated by climate change, sea level rise, and tropical cyclones.
