Primrose Willow
-
Scientific Name:
Ludwigia spp. Aquatic
Native
Description
Water primrose refers to over ten aquatic species of the genera Ludwig that closely resemble each other. They are floating, emergent perennials that root in the water bottom. Branched, creeping submerged stems can reach in 10 feet in height. Leaves are oval- or sword-shaped and can grow up to 6 inches. The various species have yellow flowers with four to five petals. Water primrose flower throughout the year, except in winter.
Range and Habitat
Found throughout Louisiana in slow-flowing freshwater systems like shallow marshes, lakes, and canals. Often found along the shoreline.
Behavior
Plants form dense floating mats. Thick growths of submerged stems create substance and shelter for small aquatic species. Parts of the mats and shoots frequently break off and are moved away with flowing water.
