Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries enforcement agents cited a subject for alleged deer hunting violations in Jackson Parish on Jan. 23.
Agents cited Valter Cassel, 51, of Downsville, for taking over the daily limit of deer.
Agents received an anonymous tip that a subject harvested three antlered deer in one day near Eros in Jackson Parish. Agents investigated the tip and learned that Cassel harvested a six-point, seven-point and an eight-point deer with his rifle on Jan. 11 while running deer with the use of dogs.
The daily limit of deer for this area of the state is one deer per licensed hunter, which put Cassel two over the legal daily limit of deer. Agents seized the seven-point and the eight-point deer and donated them to a local charity.
Over the daily limit of deer brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Cassel will also face civil restitution totaling $3,249 for the replacement value of the illegally taken deer.
Agents participating in this case are Sgt. Joshua Harris and Corporal Hunter Breed.
