Search and rescue crews successfully rescued a lost hunter in the Attakapas Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on March 1 in St. Mary Parish.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) enforcement agents, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) received a call around 5:30 p.m. on March 1 about a lost hunter on the Attakapas WMA.

According to his hunting party, he went into the woods to go rabbit hunting around noon and did not return. The hunting party called authorities to initiate the search.

LDWF agents and St. Mary Parish Sheriff Office deputies went on foot into the woods to look for the missing hunter. The USCG used a helicopter and found the missing hunter around 8:30 p.m. The USCG was able to extract the hunter from the woods.

The lost hunter said he was rabbit hunting, got turned around, and was lost for a few hours before being found. He also said he forgot his phone in his vessel.

The hunter did not need any medical attention.
