Description
The largest of the sucker family. Has an elongated body and an extended dorsal fin. Has a whitish belly and bronze to brown back that lightens to an olive green color. Unlike related suckers, the bigmouth buffalo's mouth extends straight out and not downward. Can grow up to 40 pounds. Resembles common carp but lacks chin barbbles.
Range and Habitat
Lives in slow-moving freshwater rivers and lakes throughout much of the United States.
Behavior
Found in schools near the bottom or middle of the water column. Forms large spawning aggregations during the spring. A fast-growing species, they typically mature around age 3. Filter feed on invertebrates and crustaceans.
