Description
Has a broad, compressed round body. Color can range from dark blue/greenish to yellow/almost colorless body. Often have a yellowish to orange breast that becomes brighter during spawning season and a black gill flap. Sometimes has vertical black barring on their sides. Small mouth and pointed pectoral fins. Can grow up to 2 pounds.
Range and Habitat
Native to the eastern United States and now found throughout North America through stocking. Found in a variety of freshwater and brackish areas. Often found in grass beds, around structures such as sunken trees, docks, or piers, and along shorelines.
Behavior
Long spawning season beginning when water temperatures near 70°F, peaking in early summer and continuing into the fall. Males create spawning beds in gravel or sandy substrate in shallow water. Once a female has laid her eggs, the male continues to guard the nest until the eggs hatch and fry leave. Feed on small prey such as aquatic insects and larvae. Often swim in small schools of 10 to 20 fish. Live 5 to 8 years.
