Description
Large diving duck with a long black bill & sloping forehead, creating a wedge-shaped head profile. Males light gray on back, belly & flanks; black chest & bill; rusty/reddish head & red eye. Females have light gray back, bellies, & flanks; light brown chests, necks, & heads.
Range and Habitat
Nests primarily in prairie pothole region in and near large permanent ponds & lakes. Winters primarily in freshwater habitats of inland, estuary, & coastal regions of the Gulf Coast and Atlantic and Pacific seaboard, as well as riparian areas that remain ice-free in the mid-continent.
Behavior
Feeds on leaves, seeds, & roots of submerged aquatic vegetation.

Hunting License Information
Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
