Description
Resemble large goldfish. Often confused with native small and largemouth buffalo. Typically a golden brown or brassy green color that fades to a light pale yellow or white belly. Can also be silvery. Subterminal mouths with two sets of barbels (whiskers) off the upper corners of the mouth. Large scales. North American fish can grow up to 50 pounds but are more commnly found between 10 and 20 pounds.
Range and Habitat
Native to freshwater lakes and rivers in Eurasia. Introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as a sportfish. Now found in 48 U.S. states and in most temperate areas around the globe. Prefer slow moving systems with soft muddy or sandy bottoms. Found in most lakes and rivers in Louisiana.
Behavior
Root around soft sediment, feeding on aquatic plants, worms, zooplankton, and other small animals found in the sediment. Their rooting behavior disturbs the sediment and degrades their habitats by uprooting vegetation and increasing turbidity (cloudiness in the water due to particles).
