Description
Gray to dark brown body with reddish orange tinge that becomes much more prominent upon death. May have a dark horizontal band across the eye. Has two prominent canine teeth in the front of the upper jaw. Juveniles inshore are commonly less than 3 pounds; offshore fish are normally 3 to 15 pounds.
Range and Habitat
Found in the western Atlantic from Brazil to Massachusetts. Common in inshore and nearshore coastal waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Prefer structure like grass beds or oil rigs to open waters.
Behavior
Congregate in large schools around natural and artificial structure. Frequently found near the top of the water column. Juveniles stay stay closer inshore, entering brackish bays and marshes. Adults gradually move offshore as they grow larger. Feed on small fish and crustaceans.
