Description
Large dabbling duck: Males gray overall with bright green head, yellow bill, white neck ring, and orange feet. Females light brown overall, orange feet orange & black bill. Bright blue speculum bordered anteriorly and posteriorly by white bars.
Sound
Hen: loud, descending, reedy quack. Male: low "raehb" or "rab" whistle grunt. Both sexes will produce a feeding "chuckle."
Range and Habitat
Continental breeder from Alaska to Maritimes, California to Pennsylvania; throughout the interior of the continent and as far south as Iowa-Missouri. Winters throughout the lower 48 as far north as extended ice-free rivers or lakes exist.
Behavior
Gregarious, aggressive, easily domesticated. Feeds terrestrially or in shallow aquatic environments.
Population Status
Abundant. Recent declining trend.
Hunting License Information
Basic hunting license or equivalent combination license (Sportsman Paradise). Waterfowl, HIP certification (18 years old and older). Federal Duck Stamp (16 years old and older) signed across the face, if hunting WMA then WMA Access Permit.
