Spanish Mackerel

Description

Slender, smooth-skinned fish with sharp teeth and a forked tail. Greenish back with silver sides and yellow spots along sides. The front of the first dorsal fin is black and helps distinguish them from other mackerels. Similar in appearance to small king mackerel, but the Spanish mackerel's lateral line extends the length of the body to the tail. Grows to about 10 pounds but commonly caught at less than 5 pounds. 

Range and Habitat

Live in coastal  waters from Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula. Occur mostly in open waters offshore but can be found inland towards the surf.

Behavior

Travel in large schools and migrate throughout the year across the Gulf of Mexico. Feed primarliy on small fish but will also eat shrimp and other small crustaceans.
