Description
Bright red back and body that fade to a lighter belly. Have no canine teeth. Most have an irregular pattern of light yellow lines on the lower half of their sides. Large, bright red eyes. Similar to small red snapper but have a rounded anal fin. Can grow to 7 pounds, but smaller fish under 3 pounds are more common.
Range and Habitat
Found from North Carolina to Brazil. Live offshore on rocks, reefs, and structures and will often suspend in mid-water over these habitats.
Behavior
Spawn multiple times between April and September. A slow-growing fish, most females mature around 3 to 4 years of age. Feed on small fish, crustaceans, and other invertebrates in the middle of the water column.
